PROFESSOR JOHN DUMBA-SSENTAMU is a distinguished public figure and scholar. He earned his PhD in Economics from Makerere University (in collaboration with the University of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, and the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom), a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and a Bachelor’s degree in the same field from Makerere University.
He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Centenary Rural Development Group Ltd and previously served as Chairman of Centenary Rural Development Bank Ltd for seventeen years. He has presided over the substantial growth and expansion of the bank to becoming the largest microfinance institution in Africa and the second largest commercial bank in Uganda by market share, and the diversification of the bank into other subsidiaries. Most notably, he has led the expansion of the Centenary brand beyond Uganda by acquiring MyBucks Banking Corporation in Malawi, which was subsequently rebranded as Centenary Bank Limited-Malawi. He is also the Chairman Board of Governors of Excel Insurance Company, Board Member of the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), as well as Board Member of Microfinance African Institutions Network (MAIN), based in Lome, Togo.
Prof. Ddumba-Ssentamu is the former Vice Chancellor of Makerere University where he also previously served as Principal of the College of Business and Management Sciences (COBAMS). He is also former caretaker Vice Chancellor of Ndejje University, former Chairman of Council of University of Kisubi, and former Vice Chairman of the Council of Mutesa I Royal University. He served Caritas International (based in the Vatican) for several years as member of the Finance Commission representing Africa. He has also served as the Chairman of the Academic Board for the collaborative Masters in Economics under the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), based in Nairobi, Kenya.
